I can't decide if it's the pose or the level of detail that I love so much about this! The background is so well done with the light effects and how it borders the subject and 'interacts' with him. The pose really sets the mood and I can almost "hear" the setting he is in (but that may be the abundance of coffee in my system too).
A wonderful piece!

This almost looks like a robot with the eye-gear, but the posture is far too human, so instead it just looks awesome.

Though that isn't the gear/setup I'd take to the field (Not so comfortable drawing of sidearm, googles to blinding of periphiral vision... don't worry just nit picking lol), the picture is pretty awesome. The only thing I would really do different is draw more trees or something to make the background not feel so far away. You did awesome on his pose.

Is that a modified AK?

It appears to be an AK-47SU modified. (I say this 'from the butt.) But to be honest... Looks kind of like a SCAR-FH with Thermal sights.

There's no such thing as a 47SU, unless the Russians have adopted retroactive designations.

I really don't see the SCAR at all.

Perhaps I was wrong.. I'm not that good with guns except the broad types. And I meant the SU version of the AK-47, shortened and smaller.

I could see the SCAR by it's rifle frame, but the butt throws it off.

Yeah, there's nothing of the sort, at least not that has a Russian designation. They made short AK-74s, the AKS-74U that replaced their submachine guns.
What it does look like is perhaps a Bizon SMG, though the later stick magazine type:

The stock looks like an AKS-47, though. Those didn't have short barrels.

Meh.. I'm not the greatest with guns. Father collects shotguns anyways, so I only know really about them.

But it does look kind of like an AK-47, and a mixture of the SCAR, or something similiar to the SCAR.

I only see the SCAR in it by the flat top. Aside that... Nothing. I only really know stuff on shotguns, or double barrel, over-and-over, n' so forth.
